Fraser Lake Camp

Fraser Lake Camp is a classic overnight camp located in Bancroft, Ontario. Fraser Lake Camp was formed in community, by community, and for community way back in 1955. At Fraser Lake Camp, we are committed to being diverse, close-knit, and welcoming.

Welcoming
"Arrive as guests, leave as friends."

Fraser Lake Camp has a proven track-record of developing independence and belonging in the many children who have spent their summers with us. Since 1955 we have measured our success directly by the emotional growth of your child. Our exciting programs and engaging activities are fantastic, but our real hallmark is in how welcome your child will feel at the end of their stay at Fraser Lake Camp.

Diverse
“It is not the strongest, or the smartest that prosper. It is the ones most adaptable to change.” –Charles Darwin

Fraser Lake Camp commits to treating all campers and staff equitably and with respect, honouring the diversity of race/colour, religion/creed, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, and economic background. At Fraser Lake Camp your child will eat, play and befriend children from a variety of backgrounds and learn from a range of experiences.

Creating Community at Camp
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” –African proverb

Fraser Lake Camp is intimate. Each week we host around 65 campers, 20 to 30 youth in leadership programs, and 40 staff onsite. This has been our secret to success for over 65 years: we've formed a community at camp. Our extraordinary advantage is the attention we pay to your child’s experience.

Life At Camp

A week at Fraser Lake Camp is a week filled to the brim with fun activities.

Archery, climbing wall, swimming, arts and crafts, and canoeing are just a tiny taste of what you will experience in Fraser’s week-long overnight camp program. Your child will have opportunities each day to try a variety of activities, develop friendships, and to grow in new ways. Many Fraser Lake campers have said that their week at camp was one of the highlights of their entire year!

Parent Information

The experience of overnight camp is an irreplaceable ingredient for confidence, independence, learning, and compassion.

The type of fun that overnight camp provides is unique: Campers are away from home, away from parents, and away from friends often for the first time. In some ways it is strange and adverse conditions to put a child in; however, this is why it is so important! Camp provides a safe and necessary starting place for growth, instills confidence, and helps campers better achieve all that they want to achieve.

Imagine sunset on the first day of camp. Basking in the evening glow of the campfire, campers are processing all the excitement and activities of the day: archery, climbing wall, swimming, arts and crafts, and kayaking. The nervous group of cabin mates they began their day with are already fast friends, and their compassionate counsellors are their leaders, mentors & heroes!

Our job is to ensure that the world’s fear and anxieties get left behind on the bus. Fraser Lake Camp is a safe place that encourages bravery through curiosity, and provides young people with a place to find themselves in new and exciting ways!

At Fraser Lake we talk about examples of compassion, understanding and unity. Although Fraser Lake Camp was established by the Mennonite Community, our staff represent a diverse group of people with a variety of backgrounds and beliefs. What unites us is that we are able to enter conversations around spirituality with an open mind and willingness to learn from each other.

The environment, social justice, and a peace perspective are important parts of the Mennonite faith tradition. Fraser Lake Camp seeks to establish a camp community which is judgement free and an opportunity for growth. We recognize that our campers come from a variety of faith traditions, or no faith background, and feel this diversity is part of what makes camp great!

Our regular daily camp programming includes Morning Watch, an interactive moral story to bring the camp together and help start the day with intention. Morning Watch includes singing and playing music together; stories, skits, and other creative ways are used to develop the camp community and work towards building acceptance of all.

We end the day with Cabin Devotions, where cabins have a chance to reflect on their days and build a sense of community and belonging through intentional activities.

Our Camp Standards

In order to ensure a safe, healthy and enjoyable camp environment for both campers and staff, we follow industry standards and guidelines as set out by the Ontario Camps Association (OCA) as well as our own set of operating standards. These guidelines cover everything from staff hiring, counsellor to camper ratios, health care & medications, kitchen & food production, and waterfront safety. If you would like to learn more about our camp standards and find answers to our most frequently asked questions, please click here.

Fraser Lake Staff

Ask our campers what they like best about Fraser Lake Camp and it won’t be long before you hear the names of a counsellor or staff member. That’s no surprise because they are the most important part of our program!

Many of our counsellors and staff members have a long-standing history at Fraser Lake Camp that involved coming up through the ranks as campers in the regular program and then being participants in the leadership programs for high school youth: Leaders-In-Training, Counsellors-In-Training and the Volunteer Program. All of our staff have the following things in common:

  • they went through an interview process, obtained a clear police check and take part in special training before and during camp

  • they have a genuine interest in helping children. Many camp staff end up in the teaching profession

  • they understand the importance of not just delivering our programs, but also promoting the life lessons based on Christian values that help nurture the physical, spiritual, social and emotional growth of every camper

  • they are committed to adhering to our code of conduct

Meet our Fraser Lake Camp Director, Melissa!

Melissa grew up on Fraser Lake and spent her childhood dreaming of the day that she could work at camp. She eventually served for 6 summers as both a counsellor and Assistant Director. Melissa has always aspired to be the FLC Director and is grateful to have the opportunity to fulfill this dream. She is passionate about camp and is committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for campers and staff alike.

Camp has allowed me to express myself without worrying about what others think. It has provided me with a safe environment to express myself where I am surrounded by an extremely supportive family. I don’t know where I’d be without camp but I do know that I would not have nearly as much confidence and joy in my daily life without it.
